Out for a meal but don’t have a toothbrush handy to clean your teeth afterwards? Then reach for sugarless gum.
Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after you eat can help prevent tooth decay, clinical studies suggest.
The American Dental Association reports that chewing sugarless gum has been shown to increase the flow of saliva, which helps “wash” away food debris, and neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
An increase in saliva flow also contains more calcium and phosphate to help strengthen tooth enamel.
Of course, chewing gum shouldn’t replace regular brushing and flossing. Dental Land recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and flossing once a day.
Visiting your dentist twice a year is also key to good oral health. If you’re due for a cleaning, book an appointment with the friendly team at Dental Land. If you’re a new patient, you’ll receive complimentary Zoom whitening with your exam and cleaning!
